The History of the Name “Hot Dog”

Dachshunds and Hot Dogs: The Story Behind the Name

Dachshunds and hot dogs: the history behind the name

A long body, short legs and an unmistakable expression make the Dachshund instantly recognisable. Those distinctive proportions have also earned the breed an affectionate nickname: the sausage dog.
But was the hot dog actually named after the Dachshund? The connection is familiar in popular culture, while the history of the name is more complicated than some entertaining stories suggest.

Dachshund: a name rooted in the breed’s history

Developed in Germany for hunting, including work underground, the Dachshund has a name that reflects its original role. Dachshund means “badger dog” in German.
Today, many Dachshunds are family companions, although the breed still has hunting roles. Its working history should therefore not be described as something that has disappeared entirely.
The nickname sausage dog tells a different story. It is a playful reference to the breed’s silhouette rather than a translation of its German name.

What do we know about the term hot dog?

The expression hot dog was already being used in the United States in the late nineteenth century. Its development is connected with sausage culture, German immigration and the wordplay of the period.
The resemblance between a sausage and a Dachshund helps explain the association, but it does not establish exactly who invented the term or when.
The history of the sausage, the sausage served in bread and the name itself should also be kept separate. They do not necessarily share one inventor or one starting point.

The cartoonist legend

One famous story credits the cartoonist Tad Dorgan. According to the legend, he drew a Dachshund in a bread roll and labelled it “hot dog” because he could not spell Dachshund.
It is an appealing anecdote, but it should not be presented as established history. The supposed cartoon has not been located, and the expression was already circulating before the event described.
Stories naming a particular street vendor as the inventor deserve the same care. A memorable explanation is not necessarily a documented origin.

Why has the connection lasted?

The visual comparison is easy to recognise and lends itself to cartoons, illustrations and jokes. That makes the Dachshund a natural character in humorous images involving hot dogs.
The popularity of those images shows how enduring the association has become. It does not, by itself, prove how the name originated.

Looking beyond the sausage dog nickname

The Dachshund’s proportions also matter in everyday life. When choosing clothing, back length and chest measurements need to be considered together.
Explore the Dachshund coats selection to compare garments intended for this body shape, always checking the instructions for the individual model.
“Sausage dog” can remain an affectionate nickname. Understanding the breed means looking beyond the joke and paying attention to the individual dog.
